National Theatre (Teatro Nacional)
The National Theater was inaugurated in 1908 and is built on the site of an 18th century monastery. When it was first opened, it enjoyed fame as a glamorous destination for the city's elite but it gradually fell into disrepair and at one point was rented as a movie house. After two separate restorations in the 1970s and early 2000s to repair damage, it was reopened in 2004 and visitors can now enjoy a visit or a performance in its neobaroque Old World style. Be sure to take a look at the ceiling frecos by Robert Lewis, a well-known Panamanian artist.
